Annual Christmas Parade
With 65,000 people expected to turn out, one of Raleigh’s most popular events is the televised Christmas Parade. This tradition has been hosted by the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association since 1940. Shop Local Raleigh is an extension of the GRMA and is a partner in presenting the parade. ABC News 11 is sponsoring the parade and the event is televised.
The parade starts at 9:30 am at the corner of St Marys and Hillsborough St. and works its way around the Capital to Fayetteville St. The influx of people to the downtown area does create traffic and significant delays. Give yourself plenty of time to get lined up with a good spot. Street parking can be difficult so keep an eye out for those public parking options. We enjoy watching the parade from anywhere but one of our favorite places to watch the parade from is the over on the Capital square facing Fayetteville St.
If you are looking for a holiday festivity but prefer a smaller crowd, the city treelighing will take place later that day from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. taking place at the other end of Fayetteville St in front of the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
